A former volunteer is threatening legal action against Skyblivion, the long-running fan remake of Oblivion built in Skyrim's engine, over code they contributed to the project.

The short version

  • The unofficial project , which remakes 2006's The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, is being made by volunteers from the TES Renewal Project, the modding group that also works on Morrowind remake Skywind.
  • Bethesda has allowed the project to continue on condition that it replaces all of the original game's assets, and the team continued working on it after Bethesda released its own Oblivion Remastered in April 2025.
  • In a statement posted to Twitter/X on 30th October, the Skyblivion team said that after the volunteer left, the two sides disagreed over the "continued use and maintenance" of their work.

What happened

According to the team, the volunteer then "escalated to sending legal threats", including demands for the real names and home addresses of its volunteer team leads. The team said this was "something we couldn't accept and think is disproportionate".

Why it matters

The team said it has consulted legal counsel and is "completely confident in our right to maintain the code they submitted".
